State Preparatory School is in the background in several views with "12" on the chimney, indicating the year. Another view shows the horse-drawn fire truck from Station no. 3, horses are Doc and Pat, drivers are Ed Miller and Art Pettengill. Other views show school girls (some of them African Americans) and Spanish American War veterans.

The Boulder chapter of the Grand Army of the Republic, comprising veterans of the Civil War, was organized on 19 April 1881 as Boulder Post No. 13, Department of the Mountains. In 1882 the western departments were reorganized and this chapter was renamed the Nathaniel Lyon Post No. 5, Department of Colorado and Wyoming.
